To accompany our July 2021 cover story, on the marvels of Uranus and Neptune, illustrator Sam Chivers spotlighted the maverick astronomers who have studied the two unsung planets.
“I wanted to make an image that drew together the people throughout history who have studied Uranus and Neptune, creating an atemporal space where contemporary science meets historical figures, such as William Herschel, who first discovered Uranus in the 18th century,” Chivers says.
Chivers’ image grabs us right away. “By angling everything upward, I wanted to convey a sense of immediacy and drama,” the illustrator says. “By placing the planets in close proximity to those studying them, almost as if they could reach out and touch them, I wanted to dramatize how science enables us to explore new worlds.”
